King of Kicker!

Think I'm finally ready to leave the country! It's been a weird year for me after deciding not to travel last spring. It's the first time in four years I didn't make a trip back to the Phillies. Instead I decided to focus on the local scene and spend my time and money criss crossing through Ontario, Québec, and Manitoba. Believe me, no regrets on that tip.

However, the time has come to go exploring again. Back in the spring of 2010, I was on a trip to the CWC with my bro which originally was supposed to involve a visit to Thai Wake Park. Unfortunately due to political and social unrest in Bangkok there came an official travel advisory from the government of Canada, and so we were forced to cancel. 

Luckily Bangkok is back to normal for the most part, and Thai Wake Park is hosting the 7th annual Billabong King of Kicker on December 17th, 2011. What better time to test out my new 2012 Slingshot gear ay!? So that's it I guess; by me writing this and you reading it, there's no backing out. 

Now it's onto flights, accommodations, budget, travel itinerary, and training...shiiiit, I'll keep you posted.

July was crazy fun month for me. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel from Ottawa to Timmins, back to Ottawa to Winnipeg, back to Ottawa to St-Zotique and to Trois-Rivières, and then back again. Confused? Tell me about it. Shit at the end of all that, it was already August!

Here's part two which features myself, Johny Bonney riding at Beach Club and the Derome's, Charles Sirois, Craig McCallion (Slaysh, Halfcab Productions), and my bro Justin Bonney (Billabong) at the Derome's as well. The footage from Trois-Rivières, Québec, is from a winch contest called Wake Dans Rue (Proam Productions) and features Ben Leclerc (Slingshot, Axis, Billabong, Etnies, Dragon), Yan Tibo (CTRL wakeboards, Axis, Go Fast energy drink, von zipper), Alex Savoie (Liquid Force, Sharks, O'neill, Dragon), and Max Cartier (O'Brien wakeboards).

I first met Robbie McMillin when he was a 13-year old little gromy killin' it at every X-Cup event I went to. In the last couple years I sorta fell off the Ontario scene for greener pastures over in Quebec, and lost track of the thatt little kid we called Robbie Mac. Needless to say that after watching this video he's come a long way in both style and technical ability...stoked to see him finally getting his due after all these years! And props to Andrew Curr for a solid edit.

Skate Night 09.07.11: Together for Carter!

This month's SKATE NIGHT presented by TOP OF THE WORLD will be a very special edition honoring the memory of Carter Antila. For those who may not have known Carter, he is the younger brother of TAYLOR ANTILA, a good friend to the skate community here in Ottawa. Sadly for Taylor, his family, and the skate community as a whole, we lost a special kid in a tragic accident on the night of July 30th, 2011.

It then became apparent to Skate Night brainchild, Mr. Sam Francis, that something needed to be done in the wake of this tragedy. So after speaking with Taylor and his family, they informed Sam of a new skatepark they wanted to build in their hometown of New Liskeard, Ontario. At the end of it all this new skatepark would allow for members of the community to share in Carter's love for skateboarding, and provide kids with a progressive, safe, and fun spot to skate. 

And so with that, on Wednesday, September 7th, 2011, Babylon Nightclub (Ottawa) is set to host a worthwhile fundraiser for Taylor and his family. All proceeds from this month's Skate Night will be donated to help the Antila's develop and build a new memorial skatepark in their hometown of New Liskeard, Ontario.

All Things Classic x DJ ACRO: August edition.

My friend Jamie Veilleux snapped this pic at his lake in Hearst, Ont. The boat you see is where and how this all started. My mom purchased it in the summer of '99 in order for her boys to spend a little more time at the cottage. Well her planned worked like a charm! The very next summer, my brother Justin convinced me that we should buy a wakeboard, and well here we are today.

We traded this boat in two summers ago for a jetski simply for the sake of convenience and efficiency. The last time I saw the Wilker, was when we sold it and it was being trailered off never to be seen again...until now. This boat represents a very special time in my life, and it's fucking awesome to see it again in the water especially with all our stickers still in tack! Many good times were had in that boat, good to see you again Miss Wilker...thanks for the memories.

it's my birthday!

This past weekend I was in Timmins for a little pre-birthday jam at my cottage. I showed up only to found out that my brother Justin had built a rail by himself for my birthday as a surprise (note: we failed to build one two weeks prior) even though he had six fresh stitches in his leg and wouldn't be able to ride it. Wake Cracker, circa 2007?

Might be old, but this has got to be one of my favourite contests of all time. Red Bull put together a very cool concept back in the summer of '07. Riders were brought into the Quebec wilderness (not knowing where they were going of course), basically in the middle of nowhere, got their heads shaved upon arrival, and then had to get creative in making their own rails and jibs with natural features. The highlight of the video is Oli Derome's tree bonk to frontside three. Probably one wakeboarding's most underrated stunts EVER, and that's real talk.

Raph Derome: stitched.

Check out this latest video from Joe Ferguson and Still Not Famous. Since winning the rail rider of the year, Raph Derome has fallen off the radar so to speak having to recover from a serious infection in his elbow. The injury occurred at the end of last season while on a winch mission in Toronto after he fell and chewed up his elbow on some concrete in some not so clean water. Almost a year later and Raph is still not 100%, but is well on his way to a full recovery. And that's some really good news cause wakeboarding needs more of Raph Derome.

Wake'n in da street dere in Trois Rivières, Québec!

This weekend's mission took me to Trois Rivières, Québec. A small, and quaint little town pretty much halfway between Montréal and Québec City. I made the decision to go after waking up Saturday morning and having nothing really better to do on a beautiful hot sunny day. The reason for my slight hesitation was that I would first need to catch a bus to montreal at 11 am, then  board a "train de banlieu" for a 35min ride to Deux-Montagnes to meet up with Tibo, and then finally make the drive to Three Rivers. Amazingly everything lined up smooth as!

Once in Deux-Montagnes, Tibo was nice enough to drive some new friends I had made on the train and who were looking to make it to the Beach Club. So after dropping them off, we were on our way to Alex Savoie's, a.k.a Mr. Wake QC. And being the environmentalists we are, we all decided to pack into Savoie's truck and car pool our way to the 2011 edition of Wake Dans Rue in Trois Rivières.

As per usual the setup was a good mix of fun and sketchyness. But it was really cool to know that this year's setup was designed by Raph Derome himself. Both boys AND girls were throwing down with of course the odd entertaining bail. (props to our boy Arnauld who sustained a dislocated shoulder, we wish you a speedy recovery bro!).

At the end of it all it was Yan Tibo in third, Alex Savoie in second, and p'tit Benjamin Leclair taking first place with 500$!

So after a few beers and having to pick up our man Arnauld at the hospital, we decided to call it a night and head back to Montreal. The next morning I headed over to check out Tibo's pimpin' new pad and for some delicious peanut butter toast. We then headed to the Beach Club for a shred on the cable with Seb Toots (yes he can also rip on a wakeboard!).
