Surf's up Barbados!

I can't remember the last time I've gone travelling and left my wakeboard at home. True story, I've never done it. Been to America, Philippines, Australia, Thailand, Dominican Republic, and all over Canada with my wake gear. Unfortunately I will not be wakeboarding in Barbados this time around, and that's only because I'll be doing the next best thing: SURFING!

bags are packed. passport in hand. curiosity in check. adventure awaits. next stop: BARBADOS!! :)

..stay tuned for what comes next..

TIMMINS WAKE PARK - PROJECT **UPDATE**

*OFFICIAL STATEMENT*

Timmins Wake Park Sets Sight on New Location

Date: December 19, 2012

Written by: Johny Bonney

While the lakes and rivers have frozen over and summer remains but a distant memory, I'm still working tirelessly to bring a state of the art wakeboard facility to the city of Timmins.

The idea was originally presented to City Council on October 1st, 2012. While everyone was very receptive to the project, concerns were raised that Gillies Lake might not be the ideal location for such a facility.

Again, a wake park is like a floating snowboard/skate park on water wherein the rider is pulled from shore to shore by an overhead electrical cable system, thus eliminating the need for a boat.

So in light of the Mattagami River Conservation Authority’s opinion that Gillies Lake would not be the ideal host site for a wake park, the search for a new site became necessary.  Fortunately the abundance of natural waterfront in the city of Timmins provided us with a few more options for a location that could satisfy everyone’s needs and concerns.

Kees Pols, General Manager of the MRCA, and city councilor John Curley, have been very cooperative and proactive throughout this process. By working together, two new sites have been identified and proposed.
The Timmins Wake Park Project is actively seeking to the White Waterfront Conservation Area at Porcupine Lake, as well as the old Uncle Buck’s Trout Farm ponds located on Highway 655 just passed Laforest Rd. Both locations offer their own benefits and advantages, and would be the next best thing to Gillies Lake.
However, there is still a lot of work to be done, but we remain confident that our efforts will come to fruition by July 2013 as scheduled. I will continue to work very closely with the MRCA, the city of Timmins, and the community in order to the find the best possible location for a wake park. I invite anyone with questions, comments, or concerns to please forward them to me directly at bonney.jonathan@gmail.com

Thank you.

Also, special thanks to Beau's Beer, Skoser Clothing, Herd Magazine, Fall Down, Josh Hotz, Blair Smith, and Jeff Fennell!

"This Time Around" by Patrick Wieland

This Time Around Teaser from PATRICK WIELAND INC. on Vimeo.
I must say that I was very excited when I first discovered this teaser!! For me it's a trip down memory lane of my experiences and past trips to the Philippines when I visited every year from 2007-2010. Upon my last trip to the CWC in 2010 with my brother Justin, our worst fears were realized when we came to the conclusion that our beloved filipino riding sanctuary had been tainted and lost some of its magic.

Fortunately it seems as though the CWC is regaining its prominence as one of the best spots to ride in the world. Based on the videos and photos that have been coming out from the new Republic Wake Park in Manila and the O.G. CWC, it looks as though I'll be booking a return trip ASAP!!

Pump Fakes!

Don't think this is true, but it's entirely plausible. Pump fakes all day.

Seriously though.

"Thank you for your interest in the Canada-China Investment Treaty. Although Stephen Harper prefers to keep Canadians in the dark about this Agreement’s grave implications for our sovereignty, security, and democracy, I am hopeful that we can force the issue into daylight. Your letter proves that you recognize the seriousness and urgency of what is about to take place behind our backs.

While the Canada-China Investment Treaty will likely be our most significant treaty since NAFTA, Stephen Harper plans to sign it into law as early as November 2nd, 2012, without any public consultation, any consultation with First Nations, anyParliamentary debate, or even a single vote in the House of Commons. I do not accept such blatant disrespect for either the will of Canadians or for our democratic institutions.

Sadly, in addition to the anti-democratic process to approve this Agreement, it is the actual content of this investment deal with which I am most concerned. For the first time in Canadian history, the Canada-China Investment Treaty will allow investors (including Chinese state-owned enterprises such as CNOOC or Sinopec), to claim damages against the Canadian government in secretfor decisions taken at the municipal, provincial, territorial or federal level that result in a reduction of their expectation of profits. Even decisions of Canadian courts can give rise to damages.

Realizing what the Conservatives were attempting to do, in secret and without debate, and realizing that we will be bound by this destructive Agreement for up to 31 years once it is ratified, on October 1st, 2012, I made a request in the House of Commons for an Emergency Debate to allow Canada’s democratically elected Members of Parliament to study the implications of the Canada-China Investment Treaty.

Although my request for an Emergency Debate was regrettably denied, we have not given up and are continuing to pursue all available options to stop the treaty’s approval. Given what is at stake, we hope that you will join us.

In addition to the tools found on our Canada-China Investment Treaty campaign site at http://www.greenparty.ca/stop-the-sellout, I urge you to push back against this sell-out of our sovereignty, security, and democracy, and help to educate Canadians by talking to your friends and neighbours, writing letters to the editor in local and national newspapers, calling in to talk radio shows, and filling up the comment boards of news website.

Crucially, this is not a partisan issue, and it is only by coming together to stand up for Canada that we will succeed in stopping this agreement."

Sincerely,

Elizabeth May, O.C., M.P.

Capitalize: THE DOCUMENTARY

Capitalize: The Documentary from Craig McCallion on Vimeo.
Last year I was fortunate to be invited to MC a local rail jam hosted by friend Craig McCallion. I had obviously heard about Capitalize at the Clocktower before and attended in years past, but it was the first year that I would be participating.

I can remember showing up to do my thing and was completely taken aback by the size of the setup and how well everything was put together. All the final details were coming together at this point and the Half Cab crew resemble a little army of ants bustling around making sure of it. Before I knew it, the mic was given to me and away we went, Capitalize 7 would go down in the books as the best one yet. The riding was absolutely amazing; it was big, it had style, and shit got technical!

In watching Capitalize: The Documentary, not only was I able to relive last year's experience but it also helped paint the bigger picture for me. Like I said, when I showed up last year I had no idea what I had walked into. As the night progressed, I couldn't believe the amount of work, dedication, and seamless teamwork demonstrated by the Half Cab crew as a whole. It worked like a well-oiled machine that just kept going and going. By the end of it, I had to ask Craig: "how the fuck do you do it?". And his answer was simply "I don't know, we just do." (Although, the after-party debauchery that followed at Babylon provided more answers than Craig would readily admit)...

Nevertheless, this documentary goes a long way in telling the story of how something very small and humble can come to take on a life of its own. Any person with a brain and a heart should watch this video to appreciate what can be gained from love and the unbreakable spirit of fraternity.

All I can say now is that I'm very excited for what's next. THIS SATURDAY IS THE NEXT CHAPTER, CAPITALIZE 8 - SAME PLACE SAME TIME. SEE YOU ALL THERE!! CH-CH-CHYEAH!!

the BOOMBOX wake park: coming soon?

The secret is out! Yes, I myself want to bring a wake park to my hometown of Timmins, Ontario. This past Monday I was given the opportunity to present to city council my plans to bring a cable park to Northern Ontario.
The project was very well received, although there remains some opposition for the proposed location at Gillies Lake. But with that said, I still believe we have taken a huge step forward in bringing this dream to fruition.

Not sure where this will all lead to, but I remain very confident in my proposal enough to say be on the look out for Northern Ontario's first ever straight-line cable park set to open next summer!!

2012 Canadian WAKE Championships

2012 Rockstar Canadian Wake Championships presented by Nautiques from Jono Boysen on Vimeo.
While I was at the Canadian Cable Championships, all the talk was about what had all went down just the day before at the Wake Championships. In this video make sure to check out Oli and Raph Derome battle it out on their home lake in St-Zotique for the 2012 canadian wake crown. Ultimately it was Oli that took the title, but Raph ended up wining the rail contest and so I guess everything worked out just fine.

The National Aftermath.

Yesterday was a sight to be seen. The 2012 Canadian Cable Championships took place in the unique environment that is “le Beach Club”, Canada’s first full sized cable park.

Upon my arrival I was quickly overwhelmed with all the faces I recognized on the dock and on the water. Mavrey, Dustin, Tibo, Savoie, Kelsey, Dylan, Robbie, Andy, Drew, Braden, Ally, Erika, Balzer, Oli, Ben, Trudel, Vince, Joe, Christian, Jono, and countless others. Never have I seen the number of riders outnumber enthusiastic partygoers at the Beach Club! Woah.

Not sure if the organizers anticipated such a big turnout, but Canadian cable riding was alive and well. And although time was not on our side this day, we cannot lose sight of what was accomplished.

First off, let’s give it up for Drew Austin who split his cheek open in practice after taking his own knee to the face. Although the subsequent trip to the hospital forced him to pull out of the men’s expression session qualifiers, he returned only to prove his worth in the obstacles only round.

Speaking of the obstacles only category, the Derome brothers were there and participated in the pro division. It was a real treat for all those in attendance to see these boys ride.

Watching Braden Ioi become Canada’s newest wakeskate champion was pretty special and capped off what was surely a breakout season for the 19 year-old who started wakeskating on his own just a few years back with only a winch to his name.

On the women’s side, it was again the youth leading the way with 18 year-old Carmelle Côté-Ouellett becoming Canada’s first female national cable champion. In stomping a backside three off the kicker, Carmelle had sent the ladies packing with some homework to do.

But I think the crowning moment was the men’s expression session final. As the sun was setting on this beautiful day, after spectators and ravers were long gong; all there remained were all the boys on the dock ready to show each other up. It was a great mix of youth and experience with Tibo, Mavrey, Ben, Christian, Jesse, and Jordan in the final

Tibo had his best run of the day, stomping a huge cab 9, and a stylish front roll to fakie tail grab, to claim his second consecutive national title. To do it in style like that on his home turf is an experience that I’m sure he’ll never forget, and nor will I. The smile on his face and sense of accomplishment was all but infectiously glorious.

Unfortunately I was unable to stay for the celebration that was sure to follow. On the drive home with my brother Justin, we excitedly discussed the events of the day only to arrive at the conclusion that it was all in all a great day both on and off the water.

The 2012 Canadian Cable Championships achieved a benchmark for the sport. It showcased tremendous growth since last year’s inaugural event and a new generation of Canadian riders. I can only hope that this will be a sign of things to come.

The National.

Tomorrow is the (drum roll please, trumpets sound) 2012 Canadian Cable championships, taking place at my adoptive home cable le Beach Club in Pointe-Calumet, QC. I will be there tomorrow, riding, and therefore "competing".

Not sure if that's exactly what I'll be doing, but I'm cool with that. Instead I'm gonna focus on expressing the aesthetic significance of wakeboarding, a.k.a STYLE. I'm not going to lie though, having the opportunity to showcase your talent on the national stage is pretty fun and awe-inspiring.

The ultimate goal however is progression, you want wakeboarding to be that much better at the end of the contest than when it began. The 2012 Wake Championships going down right now at the Derome's in St-Zotique, QC, have already proven so. And so I truly believe that with the talent set to descend upon the Beach Club tomorrow, we will have witnessed the best, most complete, most progressive, and most styled Canadian Nationals ever.

At this time I would like to commend the efforts of Wake Canada, Waterski and Wakeboard Canada, and all those involved for bringing together the 2012 Wake and Cable Championships in one amazing weekend of riding. Well done.

OAKS!

Oaks Boardshop marks the return of a true core shop to the Outaouais region, a.k.a. Gatineau-Hull and beyond. There could not be a better group of boys behind this project with the likes of "Hoops", "Honegger", and "Baller" steering the ship. Most of you may be familiar with the location of the new shop at 343 Boulevard St-Joseph because it's where Fokus once stood. I look forward to visiting the boys and seeing some familiar faces again. I have no doubt that Oaks will be successful in fulfilling their vision in being a real shop for riders by riders.

Wake2Wake's TORONTO road trip! - new video -

Some days ago, or a month ago already, I travelled to Toronto with Wake2Wake, Guillaume Pare, Joe Ferguson, and Yan Lecomte to film the third episode of their new tv series, "D'une vague a l'autre". The trip was well documented in words and photos by yours truly, but now watch as those words finally come to life.

It was really cool to see the end product of this project. Joe did an amazing job bringing Guillaume's vision to fruition.
