Winnipeg Day 3 and 4: contests are over.

There's something to be said about competitions. At best, I'd like to consider them to be a necessary evil. On one hand, if the sport is to grow and progress towards a legitimate board sport, it is required that there exists the necessary platform and exposure in order for that to be possible. Also, not to mention that many of these riders rely on these sort of events in order to make a living. Now on the hand, competitions can sometimes take away from the fun when taken to serious. In a competitive environment, it's easy to lose track of what's most important.

Unfortunately for myself, I let the latter get the best of me this weekend. Things started off great on Friday after I qualified for the finals at the Triple Crown open rails event with a 91.00. The reason why I think things went so well is that I had zero expectations going in. But now the game had changed, and I suddenly found myself second guessing every move I made. Needless to say that my riding went to shit as the weekend went on to the point that I didn't even make it past the qualifiers today in the Canadian Wake Park Championships pro rail event. 

Luckily for me, it's not the riding I'll remember. I mean sure ya on friday my fun was had on the water, but on saturday and sunday all the fun was happening off the water. Hanging with crew, meeting some solid locals, watching some dope ass riding, and all the while being lucky enough to ride Canada's sickest cable park was pretty fucking sweet ay. 

And now tomorrow it's back to free riding and filming for our last day with another sunny day in the forecast.

Winnipeg Day 2: getting results.

Day two in Winnipeg, and day one of the Monster Energy WWA Wake Park Triple Crown. Justin and I competed in the open obstacles only division. My ride went really well and I qualified for the finals tomorrow with a 91.00  Justin on the other hand was having a good run until he had a brain fart and decided to fall on the far side of the cable doing absolutely nothing. Tough break, but we'll be able to make for it Sunday at the Canadian Nationals. Tibo also killed it today with a 95.00 and advanced to the pro semi-final tomorrow as well.

Winnipeg Day 1: missed flights and cable found.

Started off the trip in true style this morning. Woke up at 6:35 am to catch a 7:00 am flight, ya do the math. So after a brief freak out, I accepted my fate and paid for a second flight that got me out of Ottawa by 9:00 am and into to Winnipeg at 12:30 local time. No harm done I guess.

Once landed, I headed straight to the hotel to check in and meet up with Yan Tibo who flew in from Montreal this morning. Now it was finally time to make our way to the brand new cable we were promised over at Adrenaline Adventures. Now at this point we finally understood that we had no idea where this cable was and how to get there. So we hired a cab and trusted he could lead us to the promise land right? not even!

So with a little help from the cabbie's trusted road map, the cable park was finally within our sites. Pretty much in the middle of nowhere, flat as fuck, and surrounded by farmer's fields there lied Canada's newest wake park paradise. Without further ado, Tibo and I quickly strapped in rode the rest of the day away.

Meanwhile my brother Justin was making his way all the way from Timmins (-> toronto -> ottawa -> winnipeg). He then followed our lead and headed straight to the cable for his share of the fun. Unfortunately for Justin, his ride out to the cable did not go so smoothly. Almost 2 hours later and 70$ worth of cab fare, Justin finally made it to the cable only to ride one lap before it shut down for the day. 


And so with that, things start back up tomorrow for Day 1 of the Monster Energy WWA Triple Crown at 9:30am. Justin and I will be riding in the obstacles only division, and hoping to qualify for Saturday's semi finals and finals....stay tuned.

Unpacking to repack for Winnipeg.

Yes that's right, unpacking from a weekend back home at Ice Chest only to repack for this weekend's Monster Energy WWA Wake Park Triple Crown and the 2011 Canadian Wake Park Championships this weekend (July 8-10th) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Meeting up with my bro, Justin, and Yan Tibo tomorrow in the Peg for an extra day of riding before the contest to check out the BRAND NEW wake park @ Adrenaline Adventures! GET STOKED!!

I can't remember Kevin's exact words, but it was something like "NOFX in Montebello, let's make it happen." Now whether that was back in March or April is beyond me, but whatever we'd be doing, wherever we would be, and whoever we would be with; all we knew is that we would be in Montebello on June 18, 2011 one way or another like a bat out of hell...

Understand that the plan on how to get to Montebello did change several times, and who exactly would be coming with also varied at times. Nevertheless with a bike marathon now out of the question, Andy Morrish generously volunteered his truck that would take us there. So with Andy, Kev, and myself committed, there remained only three more spots. So after searching for potential teammates far and wide, high and low, it would be Danielle, Bolduc, and Monica joining us for an unforgettable wholesome good time.

Our day started off as per usual, slow and scattered. Yet, after a delicious breakfast courtesy of Mr. Courioustimes and figuring out a few logistical issues, we gathered ourselves and would be on our way shortly. Not so fast, well at least for me. Worst case scenario came true minutes before exiting the door as I would get a call from work telling me  that I was needed for the day. "FACK!" 

So while I was hard at work like a chump, team got to check out most namely the Flatliners, Bouncing Souls, and Cancer Bats. And so goes the story it was a beautiful sunny day, they went swimming, yada yada yada.... And well shit it was finally time to close up shop with my man Drew who was kind enough to offer me a ride to the airport so I could pick up my rental car. From there everything ran smooth as, and before you know it I'm pulling up to Montebello and spot my crew holding it down on the main drag with a full on tail gate party happening, most proper I'd say.

I'm greeted with nothing but smiles, hand taps, and a beer. Shotguns, skateboarding, footy, laughs, and hype ensues as the anticipation builds, and the reality of seeing NOFX live finally begins to settle in....

The moment was finally here for Fat Mike, El Hefe, Smelly, and Eric Melvin to take to the stage. They said hello, bonjour, and then BOOM!!! DINOSAURS WILL DIE. SEEING DOUBLE AT THE TRIPLE ROCK. EAT THE MEEK. PERFECT GOVERNMENT. MURDER THE GOVERNMENT. HEROJUANA. KILL ALL THE WHITE MAN. CHAMP ÉLYSÉ. LEAVE IT ALONE. LINOLEUM. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND SKATE. I WANNA BE AN ALCOHOLIC. FRANCO UN-AMERICAN.  MATTERSVILLE. DOORNAILS. WE CALLED IT AMERICA. BLASPHEMY. REEKO.

Amazing show, not even gonna waste my time trying to put it in words cause it's just one of those things where you just had to be there. sorry bout ya ay!!

It was now time to set up camp somewhere. We had a camping option with our friend Sean who claimed he had a spot in the tall grass, but that proved to be pretty vague and most difficult to locate so we decided to drive up the highway and find a field. I'm not sure how we found this spot or how this spot had found us, but it was almost too good to be true. Tucked away from the highway behind, ironically enough, some tall grass, Andy parked the truck and we started setting up our tent only to realize that we were next to a field of horses. We made peace in the morning with carrots, courtesy of Courioustimes.

What Up Timmins!!!

What, a wakeboard video premiere in Timmins, Ontario at the Vic? Really? Ya, What Up!! It has always been a dream of mine to be able to premiere a movie in my hometown in which my bro and I would be starring in. Now add to that the fact that Ride the Wake and Jordan Sien (also starring in this movie) have been killin' it on the Mattagami River for the past week, and well folks you have yourself an old fashioned hometown throwdown with us and Head Down.  Come one, come all to this very special event not to be missed!!!

Well that shit has never rang so true! but luckily for the neighborhood, the house is home to five outstanding young gentlemen who have mastered the fine art of simply "killin' it".

Found this photo today on CBC. You might need to click on it to see it better, but what struck me about this photo is the solar panels on the roofs amid a massive Simpson's styled nuclear smoke stack. Even better is that this picture is for a news story that reads "Germany to shut down nuclear plants by 2022". Just a little food for thought and a ray of sunshine on this monday...

Our Streets on Canvas

On May 24, 2011 fresh off a 9 hour drive back from Timmins with Acro, we hit up the Standard for a Standard Tuesday with DJ Acro. Lucky for us, the Standard was playing host to Our Streets on Canvas which was essentially a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Foundation with a silent auction for some fresh photo pieces of the Ottawa skate scene. (a.k.a great night, good beats, and mad team hangs.) Cheers to Andrew Rochette and crew for keeping the skate community on point...

The FISE dream.

Ever since my first faithful encounter with Raynald Tanny (editor of Unleashed Wake Magazine) in the Philippines at the CWC three years ago, a whole new world opened up to me. Never before did I hear of a French contest named "FISE" in Montpellier, France. Shit, did I feel stupid. But how could you blame me? I'm just a Canadian subject to the bias of North American propaganda telling you that nothing interesting happens beyond our continent in the sport of wakeboarding. 

Fortunately those times are over, and North America can no longer ignore the amazing international wakeboarding scene that exists beyond our borders. I feel somewhat privileged to be a part of that trend when four years ago, my bro and I were the first Canadians to visit the CWC. I remember talking to Raynald about some solid Canadian talent (namely the Derome brothers, and Yan Tibo) who now you can easily find gracing the inner pages of Unleashed Wake Magazine and attending all the sickest contests Europe has to offer...which brings me to my next point.

Next week from May 30-June 5, 2011 in Montpellier, France, FISE is set to go down yet again as one of Europe's biggest extreme sports festivals. Our very own Raph Derome will be looking to defend his title, and it doesn't look like it will be easy with kids like Nico Von Lechenfeld, and Kevin Henshaw stepping up their game as of late. The 2011 setup promises to be the best ever, and all made possible by the magic of a System 2.0....check it out!

Trust me, the 25 min ride to Kemptville, ON is well worth it. OH and in case you're wondering what that fancy ball and a cup shit is at the beginning? well it's a kendama, and pretty much the coolest thing to come out of Japan since sushi.

Found this video on my boy Craig Beaulieu's facebook wall, and also features another hometown cat by the name of Jesse Millen. It was done as part of a video contest submission for a new contest the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler, B.C. Craigy's holmies at Family Tree were selected among 5 other production crews to compete for the top prize of 15,000$ for best video. Although this video did not win, it's pretty bad ass considering they only had 7 days to shoot and edit. Enjoy!

Stumbled upon this video, courtesy of Jordan Wiens, that showcases a bunch of Ottawa locals ripping the streets of O-town. Coolest thing I think is that there's no shops, clicks, politics, or hating involved. It's just a straight up mash up of some dudes simply killing it with some nice beats to go along true. Got INKED for the very first time a few weeks back. Decided to go all or nothing and get my ribs done. I was originally gonna get this tattoo during my stint in Australia. However through a combination of having little money and no money, it just didn't get done. So after sitting on the idea for a couple years, somehow it finally came time after meeting my dude and artist Jimmy Gobeil over @ Planet Ink. I'm not gonna go into detail on what it means and shit, but for those who know me y'all know what it's about. Team Boombox for life ya.

This video is from April 8th, 2011 when myself, Andy Morrish, Kevin Curioustimes, and Shawn Allarie spent a sunny friday afternoon at Camp Fortune in Gatineau Park. Andy was on fire all day boosting huge off the hip and locking in a few back lips smooth azzz. The fact that the ski hill was closed with no chairlifts made things only better. Except for a few cross country skiers racing up and down the hill, we had the whole hill to ourselves! Probably one of the funnest days of riding all season, nothing better than sunshine with some boards and good bros. enjoy!

SUMMER is just about here and soon I shall be back on the water doing what I do. With summer, comes the ever so intense competition season. Now for those who know me, competitions are just not my thing. For one, I'm not good at them and two, the parties always seem to get the better of me. Nevertheless, I just wanted to talk a little about the contest circuit that runs through Ontario: The Roots Wakeboard and Wakeskate series. 

The Roots is entering its second season thanks to some very hard work put forth by a group of dedicated riders who want nothing more to grow and foster our beloved sport. Having gone through the competition circuit a few years back, I don't think I appreciated how crucial these contests are. Love them or hate them, they are a great venue to promote the sport, network yourself within the industry, meet some cool like-minded cats like yourself, and at the end of the day just party your face off. We, a.k.a the RTdub crew, will be there and so should you...

I remember a time when wakeboarders would look at wakeskaters and say "yeah, pretty cool tho." Well my friends times have changed, because it is the wakeskaters who can now say "yeah I know, jackass." All this to say that wakeskating has come a long way, and some of the tricks they are now capable of is absolutely ridiculous. 3 flips, bigspins, varial flips, blunts, tailé/nose slides, double flips, 3 shuvs...you name it, and they are doing it. Now understand this is nothing new as they have been stepping up their game for the last couple years now. I guess what is new is that wakeboarders can no longer deny how cool wakeskating actually is. So yeah, let's all just get along and enjoy my friend Yan "lucky" Lecomte demonstrate a little bit where wakeskating is at. Having nothing better to do, I stubbled upon this new website/video blog at thewakecompound.net. It's pretty straight forward and simple (they kill it) by showcasing some cool videos of a selected group of sick riders (i.e. Bob Soven, Oli Derome, Rathy, Errington, LaRiche) in Florida. To me it seems like an appropriate "passing of the torch" with a new generation of wake riders establishing themselves as the future, just as Pointless Productions did just over a decade ago. Obviously this has been going on for a few years now, but it just seems that it is finally safe to say that wakeboarding, and most definitely wakeskating, have witnessed significant change (for better AND worse) in the last 2 years, and enough to say that it's progressed considerably outside the strict confines of boat. And if you don't believe me, well maybe you just haven't been around as long as I have...

Old snap, new trick: frontside rodeo 5

THIS may be an old photo, but it ain't old news. This photo was taken by Kent's good friend Allistair back on April 27, 2009 during a 6 week trip at the CWC. Kent is by nature a snowboarder and it was sick to see him bring that to the water for this first real stint at riding cable. I remember the first time he did this trick, and I was like "what the f*ck was that!?"...A frontside rodeo 5, kids. BOOM!
